None amongst equals - thieves of history

Max Müller institute aka Goethe Zentrum in India exists/remains an institute associated with great learning and spreading cross-cultural diversity. But very few people, if hardly any, know about the high scholarly ability of the person himself or about the hobby of studying, he cultivated from childhood.
Albeit, with a certain prejudice which only manifests itself unknowingly and gives rise to a sense of superiority which should ideally crumble under the weight of experience. But that only happens if 'time' ends up being kind and allows the realization of ones follies, giving at the very least a chance, to sincerely ask for forgiveness. That in itself, would need a lot of good karma to come to bear.

Being under employment of the brits, factually speaking, his extensive writings on the Veda's were following the exact pattern prescribed by the british, using which India was to be ruled.

The british policy, discussed in another post, elsewhere on this blog, was to:
1. Gain an entry/foothold in every state and establish a presence in the courts of regional princes/rulers/heirs by whatever means necessary including bribing, insulting, conniving, enticing, encouraging rebellion and creating of fake titles to appease and flatter small time local rulers.
2. Once an entry has been gained, start demeaning the existing culture and create rifts between the local sects.
3. Propose/provide a better alternative to all the existing Ancient philosophies by creating associations of guilt amongst natives about their forefathers and proving their own cultures were not just better but were indirect sources of inspiration for the native culture!
4. Thus having divided everyone into smaller and more manageable sects, rule!

The role Max played in this 4/5 point agenda to rule India was in points 2 & 3 listed above. This was in addition to the immensely huge campaign run by the Asiatic Society to study mainstream cultures and its influences in the South-East Asian continent. The HQ of the society was based in Calcutta where the East India Company had their first point of entry into the country and had setup the Asia-Pacific regional head quarters.

Before reading ahead, try to calm yourself down and think of all the bed time stories from mythology and ancient times which you may have heard from grandma or father or whoever else.. keep that in mind and then read this..

max muller and his contributions:(sic)

1. The Vedas are like the 'twaddles of idiots' and the ravings of madmen. Their downright absurdity can hardly be matched anywhere.

2. In former times, all kinds of victims were offered(as sacrifice). We know for certain, in the cases of horses and oxen.(he claims this for Ashwamedha yagnya)

3. The Vedas are intended from the beginning for "an uncivilized race of heathens and savages."

4. Sacrifice was a natural occupation for the vedic savages.

5. That Vishnu in India, became in time, an independent deity just as Apollo and Dionysus were in Greece.

6. The Greek and Indian Gods were not beings that ever existed.

7. Sanskrit and English are the varieties of one and the same language.

8. Sanskrit of Vedas is no more distinct than the Greek of Homer.

9. The meaning of Vedas adopted by Sayan was too absurd.

10. Chandragupta Maurya was the contemporary of Alexander and Seleucus.

11. The Veda's contain a great deal of what is childish and foolish. Its a strange religion of such strange creatures.

12. Vikramaditya certainly didn't live in first century BC.

13. The vedic hymns were created c.1500-1000BC.

14. Writing was unknown in India before fourth century BC.

15. Even the killing and eating of a cow must have been recognized during these feasts when the Sutra's were written.

16. The Aryans migrated into the land of the seven rivers(saptasindhu) and composed the hymns of the Ved.

17. Its easy to call these utterances(of the Vedas) as childish and absurd.

None the wiser

The stuff in this write-up, if read at once, is easily very admirable and forgotten with equal ease. It's like something you have but never use. The one who truly follows these is the one really happy and content, peaceful and probably even divine. Then again, who knows?!

Thank you Mark Chernoff, for having read all the books in the world and getting it all together.

_-^

The acquisition of knowledge doesn't mean you’re growing. Growing happens when what you know changes how you live.

Always remember, results are more important than the time it takes to achieve them.

Sometimes we do things that are permanently foolish simply because we are temporarily upset or excited.

True perfectionists have a hard time starting things and an even harder time finishing them, always.

Sadly, an abundance of choice often leads to complication, confusion and inaction.

Respect is earned, honesty is appreciated, trust is gained, and loyalty is returned.

You don’t need a certain number of friends, just a number of friends you can be certain of.

The sad truth is that there are some people who will only be there for you as long as you have something they need. When you no longer serve a purpose to them, they will leave. The good news is, if you tough it out, you’ll eventually weed these people out of your life and be left with some great people you can count on. We rarely lose friends and lovers, we just gradually figure out who our real ones are. So when people walk away from you, let them go. Your destiny is never tied to anyone who leaves you. It doesn't mean they are bad people; it just means that their part in your story is over.

Treat everyone with kindness and respect, even those who are rude to you – not because they are nice, but because you are.

Don’t live your life with hate in your heart. You will end up hurting yourself more than the people you hate.

Forgiveness is not saying, “What you did to me is okay.” It is saying, “I’m not going to let what you did to me ruin my happiness forever.”

Sometimes, a lack of concern hurts more than angry words.

Live by choice, not by chance.

The only challenge greater than learning to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes, is learning to walk a lifetime, comfortably in your own.

Past mistakes should teach you to create a wonderful future; not cause you to be afraid of it.

Life is actually pretty simple, but we insist on making it complicated.

Results are always more important than the time it takes to achieve them.

Give what you want to receive.

Making one person smile can change the world. Maybe not the whole world, but their world.

You must accept the fact that life is not perfect, that people are not perfect, and that you are not perfect. And that’s okay, because the real world doesn't reward perfection. It rewards people who get GOOD things done.

Don’t walk away from negative people, RUN!

Life is too short to spend time with people who suck the happiness out of you.

Never create an unnecessary drama and keep away from people who do.

Forget what everyone else thinks and wants for you. One of the greatest freedoms is simply not caring what everyone else thinks of you.

Don’t let small minds convince you that your dreams are too big. They aren’t.

Oftentimes walking away has nothing to do with weakness, and everything to do with strength. We walk away not because we want others to realize our worth, but because we finally realize our own worth.

Putting something off instantly makes it harder and scarier.

If you feel like your ship is sinking, it might be a good time to throw out the stuff that’s been weighing it down. The next time you decide to unclutter your life and clean up your space, start with the things that are truly useless, like old regrets, shame, and anger. Let it go. You can’t start the next chapter of your life if you keep rereading your previous one.

Do not live life trying to fool yourself into thinking wealth is measured in material objects.

Don’t censor yourself. Speak the truth – your truth – always.

Teacher and the taught

This conversation is something which may never have happened, looking at the specific manner in which it is written - that is to say with a preconceived notion. The student in the following conversation is claimed to be Einstein - probably only to lend some much required credibility and of course, there's no mention of who the unfortunate teacher was! But anyways, the following argument should only be taken as an exchange of thoughts between personalities of different difficult backgrounds.

It goes like this:

Professor : You are a Christian, aren’t you, son ?

Student : Yes, sir.

Professor: So, you believe in GOD ?

Student : Absolutely, sir.

Professor : Is GOD good ?

Student : Sure.

Professor: Is GOD all powerful ?

Student : Yes.

Professor: My brother died of cancer even though he prayed to GOD to heal him. Most of us would attempt to help others who are ill. But GOD didn’t. How is this GOD good then? Hmm?

(Student was silent.)

Professor: You can’t answer, can you ? Let’s start again, young fella. Is GOD good?

Student : Yes.

Professor: Is satan good ?

Student : No.

Professor: Where does satan come from ?

Student : From … GOD …

Professor: That’s right. Tell me son, is there evil in this world?

Student : Yes.

Professor: Evil is everywhere, isn’t it ? And GOD did make everything. Correct?

Student : Yes.

Professor: So who created evil ?

(Student did not answer.)

Professor: Is there sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness? All these terrible things exist in the world, don’t they?

Student : Yes, sir.

Professor: So, who created them ?

(Student had no answer.)

Professor: Science says you have 5 Senses you use to identify and observe the world around you. Tell me, son, have you ever seen GOD?

Student : No, sir.
Professor: Tell us if you have ever heard your GOD?
Student : No , sir.
Professor: Have you ever felt your GOD, tasted your GOD, smelt your GOD? Have you ever had any sensory perception of GOD for that matter?
Student : No, sir. I’m afraid I haven’t.
Professor: Yet you still believe in Him?
Student : Yes.
Professor : According to Empirical, Testable, Demonstrable Protocol, Science says your GOD doesn’t exist. What do you say to that, son?
Student : Nothing. I only have my faith.
Professor: Yes, faith. And that is the problem Science has.
Student : Professor, is there such a thing as heat?
Professor: Yes.
Student : And is there such a thing as co
Professor: Yes.
Student : No, sir. There isn’t.
(The lecture theater became very quiet with this turn of events.)

Student : Sir, you can have lots of heat, even more heat, superheat, mega heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat. But we don’t have anything called cold. We can hit 458 degrees below zero which is no heat, but we can’t go any further after that. There is no such thing as cold. Cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of heat. We cannot measure cold. Heat is energy. Cold is not the opposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it.
(There was pin-drop silence in the lecture theater.)

Student : What about darkness, Professor? Is there such a thing as darkness?

Professor: Yes. What is night if there isn’t darkness?

Student : You’re wrong again, sir. Darkness is the absence of something. You can have low light, normal light, bright light, flashing light. But if you have no light constantly, you have nothing and its called darkness, isn’t it? In reality, darkness isn’t. If it is, well you would be able to make darkness darker, wouldn’t you?

Professor: So what is the point you are making, young man ?

Student : Sir, my point is your philosophical premise is flawed.

Professor: Flawed ? Can you explain how?

Student : Sir, you are working on the premise of duality. You argue there is life and then there is death, a good GOD and a bad GOD. You are viewing the concept of GOD as something finite, something we can measure. Sir, Science can’t even explain a thought. It uses electricity and magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one. To view death as the opposite of life is to be ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing.
Death is not the opposite of life: just the absence of it. Now tell me, Professor, do you teach your students that they evolved from a monkey?

Professor: If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, yes, of course, I do.
Student : Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir?
(The Professor shook his head with a smile, beginning to realize where the argument was going.)

Student : Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavor. Are you not teaching your opinion, sir? Are you not a scientist but a preacher?
(The class was in uproar.)

Student : Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen the Professor’s brain?
(The class broke out into laughter. )

Student : Is there anyone here who has ever heard the Professor’s brain, felt it, touched or smelt it? No one appears to have done so. So, according to the established Rules of Empirical, Stable, Demonstrable Protocol, Science says that you have no brain, sir. With all due respect, sir, how do we then trust your lectures, sir?

(The room was silent. The Professor stared at the student, his face unfathomable.)

Professor: I guess you’ll have to take them on faith, son.
Student : That is it sir … Exactly! The link between man & GOD is FAITH. That is all that keeps things alive and moving.

Time Keepers

Ever wondered why certain expensive brands of watches have "Chronometer" inscribed on them? And why they are so damn expensive?

A chronometer watch is a specific kind of instrument tested and certified to meet certain precision standards. In Switzerland, only timepieces certified by the COSC may use the word 'Chronometer' on them and due to prestige associated with the integrity and standards of these specific labs, its become a global practice. Each and every instrument produced is physically tested and certified by four and only four laboratories. COSC aka C.O.S.C. is Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres, the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute, which is the institute responsible for certifying the accuracy and precision of wristwatches in Switzerland.

To earn chronometer certification, a movement must not only be made from the highest quality components, but also be the object of special care on part of the finest watchmakers and timers during assembly. Only about ~<0.03% of watches are eventually certified with this highest standard as far as mechanical hand crafted instrumentation is concerned. That's a ratio of 1 Chronometer for 10,000,000 watches produced worldwide, out of the 1.2 billion watches produced worldwide in 2005(worldtempus.com report). Fine regulation and chronometer characteristics of a watch can be destroyed in seconds by a rough and inexperienced hand.

Although a quartz based time-keeper(which is what watches were originally called), is almost certainly more accurate in spite of being mass produced, certain individuals and collectors prefer the traditional hand crafted ones. I am guessing its the difference between a Bentley's Flying Spur/Rolls Royce's Phantom and a Toyota Corolla/Honda Accord.

Rolex submit by far the largest number of movements to COSC followed by Omega SA, Breitling, TAG Heuer and Panerai. A total of 27 Swiss brands produced ~1,000 certified chronometer watches last year, according to COSC(watchtime.com report). If you want to buy a watch purely on its mechanical merits, nothing beats a Piaget or a Jaeger.

On the other hand, the Rolex company maintains a tight leash on the number of watches which are being sold in the global market at any given point in time and on the retail price they are sold for by levying heavy penalties - almost always cancelling the dealership if a discount is given. Its similar to the De Beer's company lawfully but, unethically limiting the supply of diamonds, even if they have plenty of stock, in order to maintain the exorbitant price of a diamond.

So, the next time you come across a Swiss Chronometer and think why is it so expensive to buy one, know that not only is it a hand crafted marvel giving you an accuracy of 99.9998%, but it defines the character, obsession and refinement of a passion, far surpassing any object commonly known to produce an equivalent or at times, even better results.
Excellence is achievable, perfection is much more elusive.

Ending the series

The true history and the religion of India.

By some miracle, came across this video which spoke about exactly what I researched. Having finally found this, I have decided not to continue writing up on this anymore and move on in the pursuit of finding something else which will satisfy the hunger of my insatiable desire to keep on knowing and stumbling upon newer and hopefully, more interesting things.

Am not sure if I should bother to publish the parts III & IV which are only partially complete, it feels difficult to simply discard them. But, I know, attachment only binds one to disappointment, never letting you find newer horizons - so, don't bank on it.

This video is part one of the series, do watch the rest of it by changing the part numbers.

Ahinsa

Pauranik definition of nonviolence/vegetarianism:

आत्मवत सर्वभूतानां हितायैव प्रवार्तनम,
अहिंशैस समाख्यात य चात्मग्यान सिद्धिदा ।

In English it means:

Being ready to serve for the betterment of every living being, considering that the same aatma(soul) exists in them, as the one present in yourself. This is called ahinsa.
